wake up babe, new reason to ditch FANDOM/Wikia just dropped

Zelda Wiki twitter: Fandom refused to take this wiki down after we returned to independence and now it looks like they are using generative A.I. for "quick answers" which are spreading misinformation. Please stop using Fandom. We do not approve of our past work being used like this. [Screenshot of FANDOM Zelda Wiki with Quick Answers feature]ALT

Alternative free wiki hostings (aka wiki farms)

  • Miraheze - started in 2015, non-commercial - no ads and runs on donations, wide array of MediaWiki features, wide array of allowed types of wikis and content, much autonomy for projects, custom domain and private wiki options
  • wiki.gg - started in 2022 by former Gamepedia staff, limited to video games, accent on involvement of game devs and thus hosting official wikis, has ads for anons (but only of games having wikis here)
  • Telepedia - started in 2022, limited to entertainment (although might allow other themes upon review), has ads for anons, replicates Miraheze structure
  • WikiTide - started in 2023, no ads and runs on donations (but also tied w/ premium version called WikiForge), largely replicates Miraheze but has stricter content policies, custom domain option

Other free options I'm aware of are either too limited in allowed content or are very outdated/unstable in technical department to recommend here (or in case of Neoseeker - I'm completely unfamiliar with it, and can't say anything about it), but you still can check them out, alongside paid hostings, on this MediaWiki page.

If you (or your community) are brave and dedicated enough you can go with self-hosted MediaWiki instance (aka independent hosting), like JoJo Wiki (who started on Wikia and succeed at overtaking the SEO) or NIWA wikis. This option, of course, requires funding and technical knowledge, but it's still very much possible.

How to find existing alternative/independent wikis

  • try to use "-fandom" filter for search query in Google, or use other search engines like Bing or DuckDuckGo
  • Indie Wiki Buddy browser extension - it modifies search engine results and performs redirects based on its centralized list of independent wikis; a new indie wiki has to be requested/submitted to get added [ Firefox / Chrome ]
  • Redirect to wiki.gg browser extension - same as IWB but for wikis moved to wiki.gg (as I understand, works automatically without dedicated listing) [ Firefox / Chrome ]
  • (simple) Redirector browser extension - in case the wiki is neither on IWB or wiki.gg, and it doesn't filter out search results - only performs redirect on whatever you get; a redirect has to be set manually - see this tutorial [ Firefox / Chrome ]

Fuck FANDOM, support real people, support indie wikis

With NASA announcing their streaming service NASA+ and also announcing it’s going to be free and also ad free, I’d just like to appreciate the lengths they go to make scientific knowledge and exploration as available as they possibly can.

RECEIPT!! RECEIPT!!

I need you all to understand how much this makes me laugh. I've been sitting here all morning cackling about it until I cry.

‘Why is trending so weird’ because of tag spam. Because people (and bots) are tagging like it’s Instagram.

image
image

This is spam. It’s against TOS and it throws trending completely out of whack, along with being wildly annoying.

Please, please, PLEASE report posts like this as spam, because otherwise it’s just gonna get fucking worse

‘Cottagecore’ is trending right now and the tag is literally 80% spam from real humans who don’t fucking know how tumblr tags work

I'm glad more people are addressing this because it is a serious issue, arguably as bad as the bot epidemic.

image

But here it is in the Terms of Service. It's been there long before this shit started happening.

Intentionally tagging incorrect tags is abusing the tag system and therefore against the TOS. The posts that tag shit like images of cigarettes as celebrity names.

That's what the TOS is trying to avoid. Within good reason. OP is right; the longer this is condoned, the more people will join in, the more prevalent this gets, and the less relevant tags will become. Tags will be as relevant here as they are on Instagram or TikTok and shit.

That and it's just fucking annoying and disrespectful to other people's time, all for the sake of scrambling for popularity online whatsoever, let alone Tumblr out of all sites.

So to anyone still bitching on how this "unfair" because you want an excuse to abuse the algorithm to get likes on your dusty ass selfie, please fuck off back to one of those platforms instead.

mossmuddy-deactivated20230511

Oh crap I didn’t know about this lemme go through my posts o-o

Just to add to this. Having tags, even a lot of them, is ok, as long as they're relevant. Posting art of several characters and tagging them with the fandom and each character or something is ok. Tagging your selfie as every generic/popular tag you can think of is not.

DASHBOARD UNFUCKER V1.0

as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter's. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site's actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.

HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.

here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:

ID: a browser screenshot of the new tumblr layout, but fixed to look exactly the same as the old oneALT

and here is the old dashboard in separate tab container that hasn't received the update:

ID: a browser screenshot of the old tumblr layoutALT

it's hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it's also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it's a good fix.

the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit "create new script", and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.

UPDATE:

made some tweaks and it now fixes EVERY page (inbox, likes, following, permalinks, search, blog, you name it). it also automatically reloads when switching between tumblr pages. also added a few quality of life tweaks, like the sidebar where xkit stuff shows up properly positioning as sticky and the items in the account and settings popups darkening when you hover over them.

to anyone who draws and experiences wrist pain like I do i. I figured out the blindspot to solving the pain. maybe this is obvious but whatever. im honestly I'm frustrated at myself for not knowing sooner bcs I was an athlete for so long. but what always confused and frustrated me was that no matter how much i stretched the pain wasnt going away

people always linked n shared resources to stretches and it'd give me temporary relief but not deal with the issue especially not any longer than the time it took me to stretch.

u do have to stretch. but u ALSO HAVE TO WORK OUT YOUR ARMS.

the reason we are hurting so much is because that muscle is doing a lot of repetitive and strenuous motion but the whole length of your arms and wrists aren't strong enough to withstand that much work.

u cant just stretch. buy a set of light-ish weights and just pick a set of wrist and arm workouts u like. do them often. stretch and do those work outs. i really dont even think it matters which you do I do a combination of this and this

just pick ones u like that are good for you, working out can be fun and not miserable i promise. do it. save ur wrists. my life has changed, i still feel pain but ive been able to work and not be ready to cry the next day from daring to try

if it's ok for me to add, I had a ton of wrist pain in college (when I was drawing A LOT) and among other solutions (like stretching and switching to a vertical mouse) what really made the difference for me was vinyasa yoga. I was really scared that I was going to harm my wrists (my non dominant one had some funkiness going on at the time too) since there's a lot of putting weight on your wrists and so on, but it made a world of difference. Frankly it was night and day for me. So yes keep stretching! But also find a way to exercise your wrists and arms too.

this goes for any kind of muscle pain or stiffness in my experience (unless related to a medical condition) and as hyper focus or bust goblin i have many an experience with those

my base takeaways for normal goblin problems are:

there's two main kinds of sore that happen when you repeat the same action/posture a lot that go hand in hand

  1. muscle hurts because it's overused and thus too toned
  2. muscle hurts because it's passively overused and underdeveloped

Example:

Your back hurts cause you sit like me hunched over drawing tablet

stretching your back brings short lived relief, what usually is going on is that your chest muscles are too tight, as they are the big ones that pull your arms forward and hunch your shoulders

what do?

Warm up (do not stretch cold muscle, hot bath also works if you cant do a bit of light cardio or such first), gently stretch the chest muscles, usually the biceps can also profit from a nice stretch

then: strengthen your upper back muscles, especially the rhomboids, shoulder blade muscles, rotator cuff, lower and mid trapizius (upper one is usually toned if you're a tense fuck like me) and latissimus

if a muscle feels constantly tight, gently stretch it (really more is less here) and then strengthen its antagonist (the muscle that does the opposite motion)

And addition as someone who suffered trigeminus pain cause of tight neck muscles: excessive stretching MAKES IT WORSE, as your muscles just get the signal oh SHIT we need to work even harder

note this is all for posture related issues, not with medical conditions underlying, also if you have the opportunity one session with a physical therapist to work out a proper training plan can be live changing (but i did it all with youtube videos, so that works as well for some)
